How can I find archives concerning student movements in America in the 1930's?
Some reference works that would provide information about student movements in general:
Youth Activism: An International Encyclopedia (2006). 2 vols. Social Work Reference HQ 799.2 Y65 2006.
Encyclopedia of Student and Youth Movements (1998). Butler Reference R378 B91
CLIO Subject Headings (using US as an example):
College Students--United States--Political Activity
Student Movements--United States
Students--Political Activity--Bibliography
Youth--United States--Political Activity
Youth Movements--United States
America History and Life (limiting time period to 1930D) and search subjects like student protest, student movements to find articles and book reviews on the topic...
Finding Archives: you can definitely search the RLG AMC file (http://www.loc.gov/coll/nucmc/rlinsearch.html), WorldCat (http://www.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/cul/resolve?AMS7418), or Archives USA (http://www.columbia.edu/cgi-bin/cul/resolve?AMN4483), or CLIO using LC subject headings, (and limits to archival material when appropriate) but you can't easily limit by dates of coverage, so it might be easier to search for the specific organizations that you've identify through the secondary literature.
For instance, if you are interested in the Student League for Industrial Democracy, you would find 5 collections in Archives USA, including a substantial collection at the Tamiment in the Students for a Democratic Society collection. Worldcat lists 9 collections, and RLIN lists 4. Finally, a google search on "Student League for Industrial Democracy" papers turns up the finding aids for a number of additional collections. SW
