In 1792 there was a reapportionment bill which was vetoed by George Washington on April 5th. How do I find out who voted to overturn it?
We have a reference book, "Presidential Vetoes, 1789-1988", which states that the House sustained the veto on April 6, 1792, and it referred to the House Journal, page 565.
- The House Journal has been digitized by the Library of Congress in their American Memory; the house journals are a bit hard to find, but here is a link: http://memory.loc.gov/ammem/amlaw/lawhome.html (If it doesn't work, you can get to the American Memory from the database search, then go to government, law, and then tab down to U.S. Congress.)
- When you get to that page, click on House Journal on the right, and then click on browse. Then you can select the 2nd congress, and then the 1st session, then go to the page image.
- Then you can select page 565, which is where the information starts. The actual vote is on page 566 and it does give the list of who voted yea and who voted nay.
