Ivy League

Page history last edited by Sarah G. Wenzel 3 yrs ago

Any index to the New York Herald Tribune for the early '30s? (it's not in Readers' Guide)

Or to sports writing in newspapers from that time period? (I tried "sports" as & "bibliographies" as a subject, but didn't find anything useful.)

The patron is looking for the earliest usage of the phrase "ivy league." He's traced it back so far to Caswell Adams, a writer for the New York Herald Tribune and to 13 October 1933. He's read many books on the topic, but none have an exact citation. (SGW)

Not sure what exactly the patron wants, but if you go to the OED and look up "Ivy League" they have the following as their first citation:

1933 S. WOODWARD in N.Y. Herald Tribune 16 Oct. 18/1 The fates which govern football play among the ivy colleges and academic boiler-factories alike seem to be going around the circuit.]

He thought it might have been mentioned earlier -- on what basis I don't know. I'll give him the information you found, thanks! (SGW)

Here's his response:

"What I'm really having trouble with is finding a quotation from Caswell

Adams, NY Herald Tribune sports columnist, which mentions the term "ivy"

within the context of the ivy league (a phrase used later). One source I

read said he used the Latin term "hedera" to refer to it. I believe his

reference would have been made before 14 October, 1933."

I checked the Ivy League web site, and yes, even wikipedia, but there is no mention of this. (SGW)
